Children's Life in Germany

Around 13 million children live in Germany; this corresponds to 16% of the general population. Most of the children live in a family where their parents are married and have at least one brother or sister. So how does the German State ensure that children live a good life?

Care From A Young Age

Since both mother and father generally work, the number of children in nurseries is increasing. Since 2013, every child is legally entitled to a kindergarten from the age of one. Approximately 790.000 children under the age of three go to daycare at daytime; this is more common in eastern states than in western states. The nursery period starts from the age of three at the latest, because regular social relations are important for the development of the child.

At Least Nine Years School

The seriousness of life for children in Germany begins at the age of six. The majority of children are admitted to school at this age. In the 2018/19 school year there were 725.000 children who had just started school. The first day of school life is an important day for everyone and is celebrated in the family. Each child receives a school bag; this bag contains a pencil case with pencils and a school cone filled with candies and small gifts. In Germany there is an obligation to attend school. Every child must attend school for at least nine years.

Strengthening Children's Rights

But it's not all about school. So, how is the life of children out of this? Children have the right to be raised in a non-violent environment, which has been in the constitution since 2000. In addition, Germany ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child nearly 30 years ago. With this convention, the country undertakes to ensure the well-being of children and to protect children's rights: the goal is to take care of children and to raise them with dignity. This includes respecting the opinions of children and enabling them to participate in decisions. The issue of incorporating children's rights in the constitution has long been debated in Germany. In the Coalition Convention, the Federal Government has decided to implement this now.
