Is Facebook secure? How does Facebook keep phone records?

Facebook gives all users the chance to download all the data they store about them to their computers in ZIP format. Following the #deletefacebook (#facebookusilin) movement, which emerged with the Cambridge Analytica scandal, many users use this method to retrieve their personal data from the social network before deleting their accounts.

Software developer Dylan McKay, who downloaded data from the social network to his computer, found that Facebook also collected phone and messaging records.

Sharing his findings from his Twitter account, McKay (@dylanmckaynz) revealed that Facebook has reached and saved all communication data on users' smartphones. These include details of who, when and how long all phone calls were made.

McKay also notes that Facebook has transferred all contacts in its phone book to its platform. In fact, the information of people who are no longer in the directory is kept by the social network.

The software developer of New Zealand saw that Facebook has collected the guide data (metadata) of all the SMS messages sent and received so far.

McKay, who wrote a script to extract the giant data he downloaded from Facebook, revealed that Facebook collected all these data on his smartphone between November 2016 and July 2017.
