I've been living in Germany for a while. I am learning German at school. and I'll tell you how I improved it.
Try to translate some sentences you hear or read while watching television, reading a book, into German. I did not particularly do it, but I'm telling you to take it inside of me involuntarily. I guess this is a good thing :).
Do not try to memorize a lot of words in a sitting to memorize a word. When your life gets bored, look for a word. And apply the words you meet. Repeat the word 5 times with the article. Use all the grammatical rules (rules) you know about. repeat 5 times for the last time.
Talk with someone who usually speaks at least one german or german within a day. If you understand the word, ask for it, or look in the dictionary and practice memorization.
And learn as much as you can.
