Who is Ahmed Arif?

21 April Born in Diyarbakır in 1927, Ahmed Arif's real name is Ahmed Önal. He opens his eyes to the world as the youngest of eight brothers. He loses his mother at an infant age. The other wife of her father Arif Hikmet Bey is Arife Hanım. At an early age, he was found in many cities because of his father's work, which enabled him to learn the culture and language of his destination. The people he sees and the way he lives have added a lot to him.



He attends primary school at Siverek and finishes school in 1939. He goes to Urfa to study secondary school. Here he lives with his sister. At the school he attended in Urfa, he had a teacher who constantly reads poems to his students. With these poems recited by his teacher, Ahmed Arif discovers his interest in poetry and thus begins to write his first poems. In the same period, he sends some of his poems to a magazine called Yeni Mecmua, which continues its publication life in Istanbul. After completing his secondary school life, it was time for high school education. He goes to Afyon to study high school.

His father, Arif Hikmet Bey, who thought it would be better for him, wanted him to study here. Ahmed Arif has the opportunity to read many foreign writers during his education life here. He enriches the world of literature with these foreign names he has just learned. However, this is not enough for Ahmed Arif. He adds the works of important writers and poets of Turkish Literature to his life, and thus gives himself a brand new perspective in high school. After graduating from high school, he goes to UÅŸak and starts to stay with his older brother. Later his father retires.

As a result of this situation, the whole family returns to Diyarbakır. Ahmed Arif then goes to the army and returns in 1947 as a graduate. University life begins in the same year. He wins the Faculty of Language, Description and Geography of Ankara University. Here he begins to study philosophy.

In 1967, he married Aynur Hanım, who was a journalist. A year has passed since his marriage and at the end of this period, Ahmed Arif's first and only poetry book Hasretinden Prangalar Eskittim is published. In this book, the poet brought together the poems he wrote for a long time. The book is then published twice by another publisher.
